[The starting QB and the captain of the cheerleaders?]
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that those who ventured out to shop today returned with all body parts in place and intact (can you believe what happened at that Wal-Mart on the Island?).
It’s a slow weekend, and it took me a very long time to find anything interesting to write about. Fortunately, baseless political speculation abhors a vacuum, and there are likely to be two seats in the United States Senate that will be filled by gubernatorial appointments in the near future, President-elect Obama’s seat in Illinois and SecState-presumptive Da Hil’s seat here in New York. New York and Illinois are remarkably similar in political topography these days, so many of the same considerations come into play in both states.
So let’s have a little harmless fun.
Illinois. One of the considerations that would normally come into play in Illinois – who could most help Gov. Rod Blagojevic in his 2010 re-election campaign – is off the table here, thanks to Blago’s 13 percent approval rating and the high likelihood that Pat Fitzgerald will seek to indict him on political corruption charges of some sort in the next 12 months. It doesn’t appear that there is a viable candidate from Downstate, notwithstanding that Dick Durbin is pushing hard for Iraq War vet Tammy Duckworth, so it’s likely to be a choice among the heads of various factions in Chicago.
Jesse Jackson, Jr. wants the job badly. That, in and of itself, may or may not disqualify him. State Senate President Emil Jones, a former Obama mentor, is often mentioned, but his age counts against him. Under ordinarly circumstances, if Blago were seriously contemplating running for re-election, sending Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madiagn to Washington would eliminate his most likely primary challenger, and would have the added bonus that she clearly has the intellectual horsepower for the job. But these are hardly ordinary circumstances. A couple of other Chicago area Congresscritters also get mentioned as possibilities. The Christian Science Monitor recently ran a good summary of the situation.
If I had to put a bet down, I would probably put it on Madigan, but I wouldn’t bet anything I couldn’t afford to lose. And if I ran a book, this would be off the board – there is just no way to handicap it.
New York. As we all know, the New York Democratic Party is the cradle of identity politics. Anybody with a pulse who fits neatly into a category will be seen by people of that category as the only possible pick. But it’s even more complicated than that. Governor Paterson’s relationship with the Legislature is completely toxic, due to an absud clash of little men with big egos, and the temptation to fix that by sending one of the perps (perhaps State Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm Smith) to Washington may turn out to be irresistible.
The only clue that Paterson has dropped so far has been to say that he thinks it is “very important” that the new Senator be someone from outside the City. If that’s seen as a key consideration, then three names come to the fore: Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Upstate Congresscritters Brian Higgins and Kirsten Gillibrand. Gillibrand is an extremely interesting possibility: not only is she a woman (the biggest identity group of all), but progressive financial and organizational support were key factors in ther upset win in 2006. Giving her the seat throws a pretty nifty bone to the Howie Klein/Jane Hamsher wing of the party.
But as there seemingly always is in New York politics there is (apologies for the mixed metaphor) an 800-pound gorilla in the corner, and his name is Andrew Cuomo. One has to think that if he signals that if he wants the job, he gets it, because he can cause all kinds of trouble for the party in 2010 if he gets snubbed. And there are those (including the folks at TNR) who think he is the right person for the job on the merits, entirely apart from electoral considerations.
Me? I think it’s Cuomo. And if it’s not Cuomo, I think the Gov will somehow be reminded how difficult it is for an upstater with no name recognition or fund-raising apparatus in place south of Exit 22 on the Thruway to win a statewide office. My longshot bet is Congressman Jose Serrano from the Bronx.
That’s all I got. You guys can yak about this if you want, or we can just call it an open thread.
Have a great weekend, everyone.

my vote is for cuomo also. muffin is badly hurt by the mumbai crisis so we’re giving her as much time off as she needs. if you could do an extra post or two it would help. and that goes for everyone else if they can!
I’m in for one, maybe two, Spook.
I will see what I can do, Spook. Tomorrow doesn’t look good, but I can probably come up with something for Sunday afternoon. I will shoot you an email as soon as I am able to confirm.
thanks y’all. i’m kinda half here.
If Blago wants to make the maximum possible number of right-wing heads explode, he could always pick First District Congressman – and former Black Panther leader – Bobby Rush.
Hey Charlie!! I am utterly clueless when it comes to the inner machinations of Illinois and New York politics. I’ve got all I can handle trying to figure out Louisiana’s
As to your suggestion downstairs that I get my step-sis a *cough*toy*cough*, I honestly think she wouldn’t know what one was if she saw one, or what to do with it if she had one. Just imagining the reactions on Christmas morning has given me the giggle-fits, though. Thanks for that!!
There is a large package of Instant Hug being sent from Brooklyn to Austin as we speak. It should be delivered momentarily.
Thanks Fat Charlie. Means a lot.
Dunno, I’ve seen pictures of a few whose design makes the intended use fairly obvious. And after I got divorced, my sister told me some stories about my ex’s bachelorette party that I wish I’d never heard.
@Fat Charlie The Archangel at 9:25 pm -
There are some shops in the Quarter that have a very interesting inventory, to say the least. Not that I’ve ever shopped there, you understand, but I’ve heard stories. Truly, I cannot stop laughing as I picture the reactions. My mom would kill me dead, though.
laura, fc, thanks much. i’m planning on avoiding all topics related to middle east crises just to avoid any open wounds.
Fat Charlie, please go to the admin section and update your email addy.
Andrew is too polite to say it, but I’m not:
K-Lo is the stupidest woman who ever walked the Earth.
And I clicked through the link and verified that she really did say that.
Un-freakin-real.
First one in the hopper, Spook. Might be suitable for later tonight.
(((Betsy)))
Yeah, she’s a dim bulb, for true. But when the field is so crowded, the pickings so abundant, to classify her as the stupidest leaves so many other candidates out in the cold.
@Laura at 9:40 pm -
thanks Laura
Gotta love this.
@madmommy at 9:44 pm -
The others need to step up their games if they want to win the title.
you’re on at 11 laura for overnight. perfect (ndfg lurrrves it!)
muffin – my mom was born in India (daughter of a YMCA missionary, no proselytizing involved) and had a great love and fascination for the place, which she taught to all 3 of us. The attacks in Mumbai (eh, that’s Bombay to me) are very troubling.
@Al the Spook at 10:02 pm – I’m glad. I went a-huntin’ and found my doc had sent it to me. Seemed just what the–ummm–doctor ordered!
I’m going to turn in, that drive home was exhausting!! The madkiddies were on me all the way about putting up the tree. Tomorrow’s forcast calls for rain, looks like the perfect day to get it done. Then there’s the Iron Bowl in the afternoon. Could be the perfect Saturday!!
Sleep well madmom.
I’m hoping to do some synagogue stuff in the morning, then probably be here in the afternoon.
we’ll leave the light on for you.
more animals
sleep well madmom!
I have no idea what to say about this.
WSJ: Rich Cut Back on Payments to Mistresses
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/nov/27/steele-meeting-resistance-in-bid-for-rnc-post/“> EEEOUCH!
Republicans, reeling from another election defeat, have taken to arguing over whether their national leader should come from the elected ranks of the Republican National Committee or be a political celebrity such as former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele.
“For this association of members to choose to outsource its leadership would, I believe, be an abdication of our responsibility,” Curly Haugland, an RNC member from North Dakota and the former North Dakota Republican Party chairman, wrote in an e-mail to Mr. Steele.
Oh, and Mista Steele? You wan’ into da [rapidly shrinking - ed.] GOP tent, you go ’round da back side, ya hear?
survey time —- who here has cut back on payments to mistresses?
All fuckin’ right!
Down Goes Virgil Goode!

Not me – what about you? Besides, Sandrine’s a girlfriend, not a mistress – I didn’t even meet her until after my divorce was final.
@Fat Charlie The Archangel at 10:25 pm -
Hmmm. “I’ve got the time if you’ve got the money?”
@muffin at 10:28 pm – I pay as much as I always have.
Just when you think Lieberman couldn’t be any more of a scumbag, the little fuck out-does himself.

OK, we’ve been able to hack into Santa’s mainframe.
And, let’s see, Laura is … telling the truth.
Hmmm. “Al Da Spook”. Oh shit, no we don’t want a 1.4Gig pdf!! cancel! cancel!

@Laura at 10:35 pm – as i’m sitting right next to ndfg, my reply is “what mistresses?”

I’ve only known (never met) ONE Sandrine in my life, she was the CFO for a company based in LA that recruited, hired and placed truck drivers on temp jobs . . . Tell me the world ain’t this small . . .
I’m clearly seeing the wrong men altogether
