Since odds are good that Louisiana will go to McCain (boo!!!) we aren’t getting much in the way of calls for the big election. However, there are some down ticket races that are heating up nicely. Mary Landrieu (DINO-LA) is running against a R-D-R named Kennedy. The poor schmuck can’t decide which party he belongs to and keeps changing. She’s probably going to win, but the GOP is throwing some decent coin down here to make things interesting. The most recent ad uses that menacing voice guy talking about how “liberal” she is, how she voted with Obama 80% of the time, Obama doesn’t “share our values”, yadda, yadda. A veritable hit parade of dog whistle politics. Blech!
Evening, folks; it’s 30 degrees outside(snow has pretty much melted when the sun came out this afternoon) and 50 degrees inside in the DH’s ever extending line of ‘days until we turn the heat on’. When our dog, an Aussie, was still with us, if we’d thrown a stick into a body of water, he would have given us his ‘you have GOT to be kidding’ look.
Labrador retriever? Cause mine would happily dive into an ice infested pond if there were a nice, moss covered stick in it for her. I believe she would play stick till your arm fell off from overuse.
Big, long, weighs a ton black wool turtleneck, old brown lined wool pants, tights, and I’m sitting on a heating pad. As long as I can keep my butt from turning to stone, I’m good to go – for some reason, keeping my a** warm keeps my hands warm. Don’t ask me why.

My rule is if you can see your breath while sitting in your living room, turn the heat on. Or shut the windows and doors. Whichever. I keep the thermostat at 65-68 in the winter, but only turn it on at night. We get a lot of passive solar during the daytime, and no one’s home anyway. We can get away with that around here, snow is scarce as hen’s teeth!
Our problem is that the apartment faces north, so no direct sunlight. Perfect for 8 months of summer, but not the month or two of winter. Also, this apt complex seems to have almost no insulation, and all four rooms have windows.

This is very early for us – the jet stream dropped way down; it was in the 30s in Florida for the past couple of days – by this weekend, supposedly it will be back up in the high 50s during the day. The DH and I have two projects this week that we’ve got to take care of: change out the filters on the furnace and finish insulating a run of ductwork that goes through an unheated basement addition. Then, we’re basically buttoned up for the winter. But in the meantime, it’s hot tea and scones, soup, chili, etc. and ‘personal heating devices’ all ’round.
@Toby Wollin at 8:07 pm -
Had a couple 25 mornings, but still pretty reasonable during the day. Storm windows have been in place for a couple weeks. Just did the cram sliced-open grocery store plastic bags into window cracks (twist them up a bit and they spring open in the cracks – no drafts). The worst rooms get the plastic on double sided tape over the windows. I’m a bit behind on wood splitting, though.
Labs are not the sharpest knife in the drawer, either Mine suffered from a severe case of puppybrain till she was well past three years old. And as much as she loves to find a big nasty pond or puddle to wallow in, if it rains on her she WILL NOT go into the yard.
Ollie is trained to the absolute necessities, but he’s really only responsive when my voice gets to fog horn levels. Labs just have better things to do.

I have a dream, Gordon, of finding a fireplace insert that sticks out far enough so that I can put a real pot on it, just in case. One of the big minuses of living in the country with an oil furnace is that if you lose your power, there is no way to use the furnace because the motor for the blower(or the motor for the pump if you are doing hot water)won’t work. But, so far, I have yet to find one. Either it’s a stove that you’ve got to get the pipe up the chimney or an insert that sticks out only about 4″(and I don’t consider that big enough for a pot).
@madmommy at 8:23 pm -
HA! This one is almost 6, lives in the country, and still tries to jump up and kiss my face whenever I take him for a walk (twice a day). The only weather that bothers him is really strong winds – I think it hurts his ears.

Yep, setters are the bimbos of the dog world. Gorgeous dogs, but just totally brainless. I thought our problems with him was just my lack of training skills, until I met up with someone who is a professional trainer and asked her. As I recall, her response was making a face. And this is someone who basically seems able to train every creature out there.
@Toby Wollin at 8:26 pm -
I know people who have stoves still on the hearth but mostly out of the fireplace. You use a length of double-walled pipe so you can fashion the chimney plug out of plywood. May not be code, but the outside of double-walled pipe should never get anywhere near to combustion temps. You could cover the ply with flashing, but really, if it catches fire, it’s going up the chimney anyway.
I remember Hana being Paradise! I don’t really remember the road, but being from Reno and driving around and about here up in the Sierra and also Cascades in Oregon and Washington, I’m used to small and winding sometimes with snow and/or rain. But it is an interesting drive in any case.
I thought Syria was an attempt to provoke something right around election time. This strike could have waited until after the election. However, with the information provided by CT, I’m more confused. And the credibility of the govment is so lacking that one really can’t beileve a word of what they say. Need additional information.
I didn’t see all of Obama, so will hunt it down in a bit.
I thought Chris Matthews’ comment was outstanding!!!!! And VERY TRUE! I’ve said as much myself when talking to friends.
I voted yesterday evening!! GOBAMA!!!
Funny though, out of the 20plus machines to choose from, I just happened to pick the one with the attitude. The “buttons” on the right side did not want to check off easily – I really had to poke the square. I mentioned to the poll worker, who said it had been acting that way all day. But it did register the votes in the end, so I guess it was okay. (at least I hope it registered the votes I made like I wanted them to be… I’m in swinging Nevada so who knows. I noticed we are Blue on most maps now…. YIPPEE!!!!

You can walk him? On a leash? I finally gave up and got a harness because she’s nearly yanked my arm out from pulling on her leash. Part of the problem is I rarely use it unless we’re going somewhere in the car. So when she sees it she’s all “road trip!!1!” But she is really good in the car, just settles in and takes a nap till we get where we’re going. I wouldn’t trade her though, she’s great with the madkiddies.
@madmommy at 8:39 pm -
Strangely, he loves the leash while I hate it. He is trained to get off the road when a car comes. He does eventually come decently. He will greet everyone as his long lost friend (which is OK around here), but he usually doesn’t jump on people. Everything else is negotiated. Each and every time. Stubborn damn lab.
Oh well. Perez on 2nd and couldn’t get him in…. that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Since I’m so disappointed I guess I wasn’t so much a Phillies fan… though I’m left coast and had/have no dog in this fight. I just wanted more games, and a better 5th game. This one was too weird.
Good for TB to get to the W.S.
Go Phillies!!!!!
So, since this was so short, I can now go in the other room to the PC (away from my Mac powerbook ) to do some deed plots (no deed plot program on my Mac… long unnecessary story) and won’t miss much since saw some of MSNBC earlier.

Right on, Cassie! Btw, long time no see!
yeah, not doing much blogging lately. But I’m still working to elect Rick Noriega to the senate, and live-people politics stuff.
Summer’s over, officially. Phils win. Rays hand it to them. And now it’s time for a long dark and cold winter ’till the next fest in spring.
Maybe I’ll camp out on our back apt lawn overnight just for the thrill, put up the tent and the camp table, pop canopy, cook something for the hood, leave the lantern on late with the cd player. Walk around looking for jams.

Excellent!! Honor roll is something to be proud of, obviously, but enjoying your friends and having fun is good too!!
Just for clarification, when is Duke not looking good??
Last year the men’s team was a doughnut and the women’s team was a train wreck. This year the men appear to have an inside game (freshman post player Miles Plumlee’s early play has been a huge surprise) and Abby Waner appears to have her head on straight. I am cautiously optimistic.
Geebuz, that’d make ya at LEAST 21 or 22 . . . weren’t you just last year a junior in high school?
Where’d the time go, I musta missed a few years . . . can we ask what College? Don’t want compromise personal info though if not kewl to say . . .
LOVE the debate topic . . . great choice!! And congrats on honor roll. Make Betsy proud, and all others too, but most of all, be proud of yerself for your work and the results.
MOSTLY, that’s how the world is ’sposed to work . . . you put in the time, you do good.
I’ll look for your name on a ballot, perhaps, in the future . .
It’s not THAT hard to argue the negative. Mostly you have to say that there are other ways to develop alternative energy, and that a lot can be done by states or cities.
Definitely not what my dog would say.
your dog would go fetch it?

Good evening, bumz. Just caught up with the comments and game.
Agree that if one has been following the campaign the infomercial was mostly repeat, but it was well done.
Ran across this site today. See what you can do with Sarah’s wardrobe money.

hiya beach house!
Hiya Cassie!! How’s things??
Welcome, Cassie.

Spook, here’s some info on a local anthrax whackaloon. Story says, he’s acted before in past. Could this be linked to the national issue? Where they likely got the wrong guy, and he checked out on his own?
Most dogs I know, other than the lap one’s, would do the same.
It’s what makes the difference between a real dog or a domestic lap blanket that yips instead of barks.

Cassie, what is the debate topic this year?
very well done!
Debate topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States.
@Cassie at 9:53 pm – After researching that, you could probably give Palin lessons on the energy issues.
But it seems like arguing the negative would be a problem.
Cassie, Junior in college?
