I’m a Stones Girl. Susan Boyle’s CD is coming out soon. She has decided to sing “Wild Horses” on her CD, and it came out on UToob. It is a beautiful cover of a beautiful ballad.

But here’s The Song that she will be remembered for –

Les Miserables

a novel by Victor Hugo
a musical by:
* In 1980, a musical of the same name opened in Paris at the Palais des Sports. It has gone on to become one of the most successful musicals in history. It was directed by Robert Hossein, the music was composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, and the libretto was written by Alain Boublil.

* In 1985, an English language version opened in London at the Barbican Arts Centre. It was produced by Cameron Mackintosh and adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird. The lyrics were written by Herbert Kretzmer and additional material by James Fenton.

* In 1987, the musical debuted on Broadway in New York City at the Broadway Theatre.

I Dreamed a Dream
by Fantine, in the musical

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he’ll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Interestingly though, most of her UToob videos have had their embed capability disabled. I’m thinking that her agent, or Simon, or someone working for her has seen that it is not to Susan’s benefit to have all those videos out in the open. You can still watch them on the UToob site, but you can’t embed the videos. Too bad. It is fun to go listen anyway. I was looking for captioned performances and interviews – no go. Some said they were captioned, but weren’t. Frustrating.

Her debut CD I Dreamed a Dream will be out November 24th. I look forward to it.

For this one song, her first in public on the teevee, I Dreamed a Dream, on UToob – here are her numbers. Amazing!

77,467,272 + 3,287,725 + 1,253,853 + 6,745,261 + 2,906,644 + 876,262 + 8,260,689 + 17,236 + 23,476 + 3,262

Amazing.

It will be interesting to see how many of those video viewers actually buy her CD. I’ll watch and see. The total here as I’ve listed is 100,841,680 views. That’s not all the views – there are many others, but I think you get the idea. She is popular! Deservedly so, in my opinion.

Here’s the one coming.

Wild Horses
by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can’t let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn’t drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn’t drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don’t have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let’s do some living, after we’ll die

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we’ll ride them some day

Wild horses couldn’t drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we’ll ride them some day

In the middle,

Memory
from Cats

Daylight
See the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day . . .

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every streetlamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And the streetlamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I musn’t give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me
It’s so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You’ll understand what happiness is

Look
A new day has begun

Pellora, I have the CD on preorder. I am not educated musically, but I know what I like. I find her voice to be phenomenal. An interesting selection of songs on the CD.

  2. i’m not usually a show tunes vocalists music fan myself, but i do plan on buying her cd, her voice really moves me.

Pellora, thanks for the post. I just got home from work, wasn’t planning on having to go in and work such a long day today so didn’t have time to do my usual 6 pm post

so i’ll probably putter around tonight and put together a little post on minnesota’s governors race Democratic Primary candidates for betsy to use as she sees fit.

    No worries farmgrrlll.

The Stones are one of the few bands I’d be willing to go back in time for so I could see them play live at the height of their powers. I haven’t bought a CD in ages, and don’t have an I-Pod either. But her version of Wild Horses is pretty good. I’ll have to listen to it a few more times to get used to it though, the Stones version is so iconic.

They sure did glam Susan up for the album photos, didn’t they? At least they didn’t photoshop her into unrecognizability

Betsy, the Social is ready backstage.

  5. Pellora says:

It’s always iffy to re-do a famous band’s famous song, any of them. It has taken a long time for even a couple of musicians to do Stones, Beatles, Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby Stills Nash & Young – that time in the late 60s and 70s was phenomenal. I admit that I cringe when I hear any of these bands (and there are a couple more that could be listed  ) being played to a commercial. Travesty. Only did it for the money…. :pbbt:

Just UToob Susan and see all the different videos posted – it will blow your socks off. My list is little in comparison…

  6. Texas Betsy says:

    where is everyone tonight?

  7. Texas Betsy says:

Texteen singing the Eagles’ Tequila Sunrise last summer.

  8. @ Texas Betsy:

i am barely here … struggling thru small chores and debating going to bed early.

  9. madmommy says:

Here, watching football cause it is Saturday night…duh!

I am the bestest mommy ever, because I got the little guy a pair of cammo cargo pants today. The big kid needed cool weather clothes, so I got him some sweats and jeans, then I saw the cammo. I knew he’d like them, and I also knew the little guy whoud throw a fit if I didn’t get him some too. When I got home from the store and showed him what I’d bought, he said “Army pants?!?! Sweet!!!”

    He’s easy to please.

  10. Texas Betsy says:

Three students tomorrow, then TexteenBuddy and Lollipop here for about six hours. I may need to get some sleep tonight!

See y’all briefly in dribs and drabs tomorrow.

Now I am here! I sat through four hours of auction for a lousy $5 chair! :fume: Usually they have good stuff for my shop that no one else wants, but not tonight!

I need to go check some football scores, then I will be back. :brb:

  12. madmommy says:

    @ gnome de plume:

Texas won big! Bama won too, natch :yay: Of course they were undefeaated last year till they had to face Tebow and Florida in the conference championship. I cannot wai till Mr. Jeebus-Football graduates. Like every other Florida QB, he’s gonna suck in the NFL

    Time for bed. Goodnight all!

  13. gnome de plume says:

 All of the sudden the :exhausted: is seeping in. I think I am going to turn in. I had a tense day and now I am relaxing and fading fast. :sleepy:

  14. gnome de plume says:

    See y’all tomorrow

I went to watch, well listen, to Susan sing Wild Horses again – ended up listening to the Stones and others who sang the song, and one video of a the song of same name but different lyrics that has a photo slide show plus videos of Sharon Tate. So for the last two hours or so, I’ve been watching videos of several of the women who participated in the Tate-Labianca murders in August 1969. Not exactly how I thought I would spend part of my Saturday night. Sigh.

Susan Atkins got it in the end. As did Leslie Van Houten. I don’t think so for Patricia Krenwinkle – no idea if she does yet – I stopped watching her parole hearing. Didn’t watch any of the others. I couldn’t watch or listen to quite a lot of the news reels – there is a lot. And no, I specifically avoided any news reports or interviews that were graphic.

All that because I watched this.

Know y’all have gone to bed. I’m going now. :kisses: :waves:

Wild Horses by Jagger/Richards is one of those tunes that transcend genre, interpretation, and deliverance.

It’s easily one of my fav songs of all time.

It’s a camp jam staple to this day at fests, be they bluegrass or not.

I’ve heard versions of this song on the radio, on alt FM, on Classic FM, and from many, many other sources over the decades.

Susan Boyle’s rendition is up there with the best of them.

What a great rendition. And VERY like an Appalachian Interpretation I heard, from somewhere, from an alt indie artist.

Great pick Pel, thanks for sharing. She nails the song.
