Doctors and Nurses Need to Be Heard

I’ve seen polls that say a majority of doctors and nurses want some health care reform and this latest poll shows it. Poll Finds Most Doctors Support Public Option
When polled, “nearly three-quarters of physicians supported some form of a public option, either alone or in combination with private insurance options,” says Dr. Salomeh Keyhani. She and Dr. Alex Federman, both internists and researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, conducted a random survey, by mail and by phone, of 2,130 doctors. They surveyed them from June right up to early September.
The researchers say they found strong support for a public option among all categories of doctors. “We even saw that support being the same whether physicians lived in rural areas or metropolitan areas,” says Federman.
“Whether they lived in southern regions of the United States or traditionally liberal parts of the country,” says Keyhani, “we found that physicians, regardless — whether they were salaried or they were practice owners, regardless of whether they were specialists or primary care providers, regardless of where they lived — the support for the public option was broad and widespread.”

The survey even found widespread support for a public option among doctors who are members of the American Medical Association, a group that’s opposed to it. The AMA fears a public option eventually could lead to government putting more limits on doctors’ fees.
However, the AMA hasn’t always been there.
Back on June 11, 2009, American Medical Association Trying To Torpedo Health Care Reform Again
Just days before President Barack Obama is set to address the American Medical Association to pitch its members on his vision for health care reform, the 250,000-member physician group announced it would oppose a major component of that effort. On Wednesday night, the New York Times reported that AMA was “letting Congress know” that it would resist a public plan for health insurance coverage. Historically and philosophically, however, AMA’s opposition is hardly newsworthy. Despite a lofty reputation and purported commitment to universal coverage, AMA has fought almost every major effort at health care reform of the past 70 years. The group’s reputation on this matter is so notorious that historians pinpoint it with creating the ominous sounding phrase “socialized medicine” in the early decades of the 1900s.
Makes you wonder if the heads of the AMA are paying any attention to their members, or if there has been this huge shift in opinion by the doctors.
On the other hand, nurses have been very pro-health care reform. The California Nurses Association, National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC), the United American Nurses, and Massachusetts Nurses Association will bring together 150,000 nurses nationwide under the banner of National Nurses United. They have created a super-union. And they are pro-health care reform.
This week, 1,200 registered nurses convened in San Francisco to inaugurate an unprecedented super-union. According to the CNA’s press release, the merger of the CNA/NNOC, the United American Nurses and Massachusetts Nurses Association will bring together 150,000 nurses nationwide under the banner of National Nurses United.
The conference will focus on policy issues including the Employee Free Choice Act and single-payer healthcare, as well as the development of a broader organizing vision that will shape debates on “national and state healthcare reform, the ability of nurses to advocate more effectively to protect patients, and standards for nurses that are vital for the retention and recruitment needed to expand the [registered nurse] workforce.”
On Sept. 10, 2009, Registered nurses from all over the U.S. traveled to the White House Thursday to support President Obama after his health care speech to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night. American Nurses Association President Rebecca M. Patton, RN, praised the president for advocating for people who lack access to basic healthcare services and for fighting for consumer protections in the health insurance market. “As nurses, every day we see first-hand the heart-breaking consequences of our nation’s flawed system,” Patton said. “We see patients in danger when they can’t access or afford the care they need.”
The ANA values patient choice and believes that a public health insurance plan should be an option in healthcare reform. President Obama complimented nurses for their compassion, dedication and professionalism. “You’re the bedrock of our medical profession,” Obama said.
We need to let our doctors and nurses know that we appreciate their care for us and their caring about us. Most are in the business to heal us, and it seems they are walking the extra talk now. I hope Congress listens.

Years ago, AMA lobbied for the tobacco industry.
Most AMA members are actually med students (get freebies) or retired (get freebies).
They are a lobbying organization. Money doesn’t come from members. It comes from outside.
So rush dinner, get there on time. Listen to goodhearted, well-meaning and intelligent people repeat all their (good) points at least 10 times. Learn good stuff (but not 1.5 hours worth, maybe 15 minutes worth). Rush home to catch most of the 3rd and 4th periods. WOTTA GAME! Pat’s scored 12 points in 75 seconds, and won the game by 1 (count them, one) point.
HOLY SCHLMOLEY!
Must be up early, so I’m out sleep well, everyone.
And great post, Pellora.
It was an awesome game gordon. Congrats. And good night.
That was a tough game for me, Gordon. I hate Belicheater and T.O. with equal intensity…namely, the heat of a thousand white hot suns.
Count my doctor among those who support a public plan. He knows how the insurance companies deal with physicians and figures the government can’t be any worse. He now specializes in geriatrics so has a good size medicare following.
He got the geriatric specialty after I started going to him, but I have now aged into the speciality.
How Was Your Year?
You want to know how it will go nationally, with reforms?
As California goes, so goes the nation.
Still.
There’s yer future, USA.

Time for bed, the crazy is running strong tonight. Much family drama. We just can’t seem to bury someone without a whole big pile of crazy thrown on top.
Sleep well madmom. Your family is not alone.
@ madmommy:
That’s the rule for family weddings and funerals. I’m sorry about your loss, MM. In lieu of attending the service, gather the madkiddies around and share with them your memories of your aunt.
Time to head toward bed in this household.
Pain-free sleep, Betsy. Night, all.
Sleep well sharonlee.
I’m out too. This three jobs + errands stuff is exhausting.
@ madmommy:
Sorry Madmommy. Times like this are tough enough without The Drama. Sigh. Thinking of you. Sharonlee is right – gather the Madkiddies and celebrate her life.
G’night Gordon, though I think you’re long gone until tomorrow!
The AMA is like a flag – blows with the wind. So it might be that they will try to reverse course on this, but it won’t make a difference since the doctors aren’t following.
I was glad to see this poll actually. Last I had heard, most doctors were not into reform. But that was probably AMA propaganda… which apparently didn’t work.
Good for the nurses! They are doing awesome organizing and talking. Obama just met with them so hopefully he listened to them.
g’night Betsy. And Madmommy. Sharonlee. Sweet pain free calming light dreams.
Once again, I show up and just about everyone is gone for the night! Harrumph!
I did make my special super secret hot fudge sauce for Mr. Gnome tonight. He was feeling very down and only chocolate on Freddy’s Frozen Custard could make it better.
I posted a selection of photographs from my summer adventures on my FB page. If you are my friend, you can go see them.
I’ll stay and chat for a bit before I shut down. How was your day Gnome?
I’m still here. I was putting a UToob of Patrick and his wife Lisa in the other post where comments on them were made, rather than here.
Nice treats for Mr. Gnome. Sounds
@ Pellora:
Are you on FB at all?
time to go. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZ
@ Texas Betsy:
It went pretty well. I didn’t do any of the housecleaning I intended to do, although I did get three or four loads of laundry done. Gus is here for the first time in a long time. Theodore, too. He is hiding behind the monitor!
Here is an interesting letter from the Organic Consumers Association to John Mackey of Whole Foods. It helps keep me from desiring to shop there.
Pellora, I think I can send you a link to my pictures via e-mail. I will try.
Hi Gus! Hi Theo!
@ gnome de plume:
I have no FB. I’ll check my mail. Thanks.
g’night again Betsy! sweet pain free calming dreams.
Got your email – which was caught momentarily in my nifty spam catcher… different email than the one I have in there for you. Sneaky
Anyway, I can look if I sign up. Do I want to do that? Do you upload to picasa?
@ Pellora:
Yikes! I could put them all on Picasa if you are really, really interested, but FB is a lot easier!
These pictures didn’t upload to Picasa – FB takes them straight from my computer.
Pellora, I just noticed a link at the bottom of the album that said anyone could view it using that link, so I sent it to you. Let me know if that worked.
OMG! I just found this photo from the Million Moron March at Watertiger’s place. Pellora, if you could tell the lurking mod we need it embedded, I am sure others will get a great big
from it.
lurking helper mod was here
I agree with them that the public option is needed. Hell, i see it first hand as a pharmacy technician. Rationing is going on when it comes to treatments, big time.
BTW, i’m moved into the new place. Tired, ready to collapse and looking to file bankruptcy. Making an appointment to see an attorney about it in the next two days. My checks are being garnished as we speak. Not fun, and its making it hard to pay anything (like car payments or mandatory required insurance for said car) when the jerks are double dipping me. Wages garnish on my paycheck and they also took almost 200 from my bank as well (from some other agency. hence the going to find some lawyers.) THAT is double dipping anyway you look at it.
Anyway, i’ll live. i’m just grumpy at the moment.
@ gnome de plume:
They are so stoopid it’s
or
I saw that sign. I’ll get it posted here in a minute!
@ gnome de plume:
I’m looking for the other funny stoopid sign I saw today… don’t remember where so not finding it right away. Just so beyond stoopid, and unfortunately those that aren’t are just ignorant.
dumbing down of America has worked too well.
@ gnome de plume:
I’ll sign up for FB…Nevermind! That last linkie worked!
Is the other sign you saw the first one on Cujo’s site? About how we have more Czars than the USSR? Morans.
Thanks Gnome – good pix. Looked like a good time was had by all! Thor! You on ladder! Neat caves. Pretty NM and Cape Code and OR. Hot dog, cinnamon sugar… not so sure. But he sure is smiling!
The WWJD sign
Didn’t the real mod post that once before?
Oh, and thanks for the open letter from the Organic Consumer’s Association. I so need that! And already see my face cream/deoderant company on the poo poo list in the letter. So I guess I’ll pick a different one next when I’m out.
Waste not Want not. I’ll try anyway.
@ aliasofwestgate:
Alias, it does sound a if you need an attorney. You also need to change banks immediately. They have the right, thanks to our Repig friends, to grab whatever they want out of your account if you owe them money. So, if you have a Bank of America credit card and you have a Bank of America checking account and you don’t pay the credit card as promised, they can come and get the money out of your account. Move what little money you have to a bank with which you have no other relationship. ASAP.
@ gnome de plume:
Nope, but saw those too. It was a lady proudly holding her sign up high… upside down. Reminded me of that guy with the sign during the campaign that led to the term “moran” ! She’s just being so proud, and being so really not.
@ Pellora:
Yes, the real mod did post that sign during my post of that day. Wait a minute! I think I embedded it myself! I bet I can do it again. Just watch:
I give you Glenn Blech’s audience
@ gnome de plume:
That’s the one! So we are so on topic in a very sick way….. wonder if there are any docs in these bunches of peeples… if so, I want to know so I be sure NOT to go to them.
@ gnome de plume:
It wasn’t big… but
Excellent advice.
Which reminds me… I had a charge the other day for a bill pay that I’ve never had before. I need to check on that tomorrow.
Wonkette has a less than funny sign that I won’t post here
@ Pellora:
Yeah. I saw that only slightly-veiled racist sign on KO tonight.
I just realized I am still on Santa Fe time. I really should head to bed, but Mr. Gnome is there reading, being cuddled on by three very large dogs – Thor’s dad and a brother and sister. So there is no room for me!
There’s a chant in this one…
that is sick and funny coming from the morans Still haven’t found my sign yet, but I sure have found a lot from which to choose….
@ gnome de plume:
If you had a California King Sized Bed there just might be room for you… on the edge!
I’m getting ready to head off to bed too. To read a bit. My sleep is all messed up, but it’s mostly due to the lawsuit that I got drug into as a “Expert Witness”
I didn’t want this. Nice pay day I guess, but the stress…. I’ll be back at it tomorrow. I have other work to do too….. except this late at night I’m not very good and I need to be accurate.
Plus I feel like I gotz some cold or something hanging around
and just lurking… so I guess I better turn in too.
OK, if you are gone, then I am, too.
BTW, did you see that Rachel opened her show tonight with a special clip of the Billionaires for Wealthcare who showed up at the Million Moran March? Her viewers crashed their site! She played their anthem, which is set to the Battle Hymn of the Republic. It is great. I think probably the most effective counter to all the Moranic activity.
You know. I am just so sorry to see such hateful signs from that march over the weekend. There really are a lot of unhappy people who are racist, uneducated, ignorant, and angry. That is not a good combination.
Sigh. What to do? Ignoring them isn’t going to help. They don’t want to discuss. They don’t want to learn. They think they are being told the truth. It’s really very sad and it’s a horrible situation here in America. I’m glad they are now in the minority, but that doesn’t make it any better really. Every day the rest of us are attacked. Imagine what it must be like to be a person of *anything* but white. I hope we succeed in making America healthy again, and that they benefit. I think we will have to give up any thought that anyone but them made things better in this country. I guess if we can make things better, we all win, and we’ll just have to let them take credit. So what. We’ll know the truth. And the truth will out down the road. Getting the credit for the good shouldn’t be our foremost goal. Getting America healthy again should be, no matter how. Grace in the face of hatred. A real virtue.
@ gnome de plume:
I just saw that at UToob but I thought it was another whackjob deal. I’ll find it if you think it would be okay here.
Pellora wrote:
I just linked to their website in my comment. They are real. I saw a link to them from a California rally last week.
OK. Bucky is out of my bed, so maybe I can get into it. (He weighs 115 pounds, BTW.)
@ gnome de plume:
And you know what, those peeple who watched the Billionaires for Wealthcare don’t look like they got it.
That is scary.
Good luck on gaining ground in the bed carousel! I put Rachel’s UToob in your comment.
g’night. I get to go claim a spot on my bed around and with 3 kitties. And when the nights are chilly, that becomes more of a deal than when it’s warm or hot. It’s only 57 out. Didn’t get too warm today.
Uh oh. One last link before I shut her down. Healthcare done right: In a Canadian ER.
@ gnome de plume:
It wasn’t the bank that grabbed the money. It was a second court levy but it was taken directly from my bank account by the third party. My credit union HAD to obey the court order. I don’t even know who’s behind the bloody well court order at this point. That part’s making me mad, because it was filed in such a way that my credit union can’t tell me who’s doing it and all i can see is the name of the third party agency on my statement.
I understand my debts, but its harder than hell to do when you work for under 10$ an hour. Which just isn’t enough to live on anymore. Cost of Living has gone up to astronomical levels in a lot of ways. I love being in one of the most underpaid jobs (retail pharmacy median is what i’m making NOW, sadly.), and handling information for which i should be living on a lot better wages. If i could do so, i’d go over to canada now. At least over there i can be absolutely sure i’d get some type of living wage–AND i’d be paid in accordance of the information and the material i handle. Yargh.
Either way, i’m taking steps on this nasty turn of events. No way in hell am i leaving it as is.
{{{ alias }}} that bites, big time.
Morning y’all! The crazy train just keeps rolling along
Mom’s other sister, who is the self-centered drama queen of all time, has landed in the hospital. Again. When mom called me with the news of my aunt’s death yesterday, she said that her other sister would be in the hospital within a week, because she could not let her sister “out-sick” her. Turns out she was psychic, because when she called to let crazy aunt know what had happened, her husband said she was hospitialized
He’s nearly as nutty as she is. Being a hypochondriac of the first order, she is hospitilized for the slightest thing. Seems in one of her many visits to the ER she picked up drug-resistant staph.
The only positive I can see in all this is that mom is a half-sister to my aunts. Their dad died, then several years later my Granny maried Poppa and they had my mom. Hopefully teh crazy stays on that side of the family
Somehow among the cousins in that branch, there is one sane, rational person from each of the aunts. Their other kids, OTOH…
Y’all just get the party rolling after I go to sleep, eh?
@ Texas Betsy:
We wanted to give you something to read when you got up.
I rolled out of bed late this morning because after hitting the hay, I read for too damn long! Didn’t even want to look at the clock to see how late it was when I finally turned out the light.
new post upstairs
