Nice rally this evening on a street corner in downtown Austin.  The main banner was protesting against the crackdown in Iran, and the majority of protesters used the protest signs provided by organizers.  A handful brought their own were protesting Ahmenidijad himself rather than protesting against the way the election results were handed.

Pix and a few VERY short videos above.

The organizers thing we had about 175 different people total, and I’d estimate that about 8-10 were press.  As with the first rally and the candlelight vigil, I would estimate that about 75% or more were either Iranian-born or of Iranian descent.  Everyone was calm, polite, friendly and well-behaved.  Many Austinites honked in support of Iranian democracy and there were no hecklers or counter-protesters.

More info here.

OK, all caught up. Goodness y’all were prolific this evening!

Gotta say I’m a bit ticked that I finally got mad enough to use my new favorite phrase, and it’s in response to a satrical story :fume:

Looks like a decent turn-out today, surprising considering teh miniscule attention span of the average American.

  2. sharonlee says:

Election, what election? Don’t you know MJ died?

  3. gnome de plume says:

Mentioning honking reminded me that last time I was in Austin some folks were standing on one of the I-35 overpasses with a big banner that read “Honk if You Are Against Gay Marriage”. There was a fair amount of traffic and I heard only two honks – a car and the 18 wheeler in the lane next to me. It was obvious that the banner folks were in the wrong city.

  4. Texas Betsy says:

This one seemed much less publicized than the previous two events, and only one TV station sent video cameras. At least five of them at the vigil.

  5. Texas Betsy says:

MJ Sharonlee? Who is MJ? Oh the guy who got Rachel pre-empted for tonight!

  6. sharonlee says:

Rachel is on vacation this week.

  7. Texas Betsy says:

Yes, but there was an actual political commentary show on yesterday.

  8. Sharonlee says:

Thanks, Larue, for posting Betsy’s pix earlier. Betsy, I wasn’t home to open my mail and wouldn’t know what to do with it if I had been. Is there a guide somewhere?

  9. madmommy says:

    @ Texas Betsy:

Maybe once he’s planted the media will move on to more important stuff. Like the Octo-mom’s new show, or if Obama is still smoking or not :headdesk: Because, really, there’s just not that much going on in the world, is there??

  10. Texas Betsy says:

Sharonlee I put together a guide for Pellora when she was working on her first post(s). It’s currently on the computer that Texteen is using, but I can send it to you if he ever next time he leaves his room.

  11. Sharonlee says:

I am yawning, so I believe it is time for me to crash.

Glad you and Texteen were able to join the rally. Pain-free sleep now. :bye: :asleep:

  12. Texas Betsy says:

    thanks sharonlee. sleep well.

  13. larue says:

    @ Sharonlee:

Welcome ma’am. I gotta pull my weight as I lose it, given my propensity to throw it all over the place!

  14. larue says:

Betsy, nice pics and vids, thanks for sharing.

    We learn as we go.

You sleep well and pain free . . . . and thanks for the two spots this week.

    I appreciate it. :D

  15. Texas Betsy says:

any time larue. see you and your kitchen on Friday?

    Yes ma’am!

Given the rabbit food me and mine are on, I gotta think about lookin at some vegan stuff, maybe. Although, with our Nation’s Holiday comin up, I’m gonna bust out the camp stove to our patio, lite it up and stuff some wet applewood chips under it and hope we don’t get busted for illegal bbq. Gas stove, small.

And I garentee, there ain’t gonna be no sissy wabbit food on THAT grill!!! I’m talkin big red meat I think, for the FIRST time in months . . . :D

So we’ll see . . . maybe a shredded marinated veggie salad, and some big red meat. With que’d up and smoked veggies to be shredded . . . a bit of all worlds, n’est ce pas? :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

  17. Texas Betsy says:

    poifect!

thanks for filling in the past few days.

i’m gonna go find a bed and get some sleep.

  18. gnome de plume says:

Night all. We’ll see how fast I can hop out of bed in the morning. :bedbounce: I like this early rise thing, but the going to bed side is hard for me to do some nights.

  19. gnome de plume says:

Look! I did :bedbounce: ! I beat the two other early birds and I even had a rotten night of sleep – weird dreams and the grandson allergy coughing. (Had to dose him again in the middle of the night.) I’m waiting for :coffee: to finish. Ahhhh. I hear it now. :sipcoffee:

  20. Good morning beach bumz! I am gonna go kayaking at some normal hour. Who’s in?

  21. Good morning beach bumz! I am gonna go kayaking at some normal hour. Who’s in?

  22. gnome de plume says:

    @ freckles cassie:
I’d love to kayak with you! But first I gotta walk the dogs, then get the GS up and ready for last morning of summer video camp.

  23. madmommy says:

Blergh :bleurgh: I’ve been up since 5:30 but only now just reaching functional levels. :coffee: :sipcoffee:

Much to do today, packing suitcases, tidying up, laundry, etc. Madhubby and the kids are leaving in the morning, while I go to work. Then I’m coming home to collect the critters and head north. We’ll be gone till next Saturday. Hopefully the idiot neighbors won’t burn the house down Saturday while shooting off truckloads of fireworks. It’s not like we’re under a burn ban or anything due to the dry conditions

  24. gnome de plume says:

    @ madmommy:
Oh man! We are so tinder dry that I am worried about the official fireworks that they are going to do on the 4th. Even though they do the show from little Lake Gnomeville in the park, sparks and ash will fly everywhere. Fortunately all other private stuff has been banned.

  25. madmommy says:

    @ gnome de plume:

Whew!!! Just gave the madkiddies a haircut. The big kid does fine, though he’s not thrilled with the scissors around his ears. The little guy is another story alltogether. First I had to catch him, then I had to hold him with one arm and work the clippers with the other. By the time we were done the both of us were covered in hair, tears and snot. But now we’re showered and he’s admiring how handsome he is in the mirror. He told me that when daddy gets home he needs a haircut too. But no worries, he will hold daddy’s hand so he doesn’t get scared and cry. :ohno: OY!!!

  26. gnome de plume says:

Whew! I am now back from two sets of dog walks on two different rivers! Mr. Gnome stayed home to get GS up and off to camp, but decided to let him sleep in until he was well rested. The kid is too scheduled and doesn’t get enough sleep, so I am fine with that. Next year the rule will be no morning summer camps. GD#1 did fine with afternoon camp, but mornings are rude! :exhausted:

    California: A Dream Decimated

That essay is spot on. I was born in California – Ventura County, but left with my parents when I was 2-1/2. My parents’ first years of marriage in the early ’50’s took place there. Growing up listening to the stories, California appeared in my dreams as the Golden Land. I didn’t get to visit California again until I was all grown up and in my 30’s and by then it was overcrowded and overpriced and held no appeal at all. It is sad to see Ahnold and the Rethugs destroy it, but perhaps responsible government will rise from the ashes, just as we saw and are seeing happen at the federal level with BushCo and the change to an Obama administration. :fingerscrossed:

  28. Texas Betsy says:

morning bumz. haven’t been to calif since i was 7 but everything i have heard indicates that prop 13 is its doom. what a shame.

  29. sharonlee says:

Have to admit I have a wierd experience of California. Most contact was in San Francisco staying in hotels on Union Square or residing for a week at a time in Mill Valley. Not the typical life, I know. I knew I could never move there because I was spoiled by conventions in the city and visiting my relatives on Mount Tam. My job would never have supported that lifestyle.

Temperature was 77 on my drive in to work this morning. Will get into the 80s with possible rain showers. The holiday is supposed to be damp, so in areas that allow fireworks fire threats should be lower.

  30. Lea says:

From everything I’ve read, it’s our political system that’s doomed us as much as Prop 13. It only requires a bare majority vote by the public to pass a proposition, which can increase spending, yet Prop 13 put in place a requirement for a 2/3s majority vote by the legislature to pass tax increases. A minority can put a stranglehold on tax increases, which is exactly what’s happening now. The Dems have proposed a ton of cuts along with a $15 increase in the car tax and an increase on cigarette taxes and on oil. Arnie vetoed it and the Repugs in the leg won’t approve anything else. Arnie seems bound and determined to drive us over a cliff. And in the meantime, everyone who comments on articles like the one PB linked to blames it all on the Dems and the unions. Oh, and the pension funds. So clearly, as a Democratic union member with a pension, it’s all my fault. PB, where’s that hari kari emotie when I need it?

  31. sharonlee says:

I thought everything was supposed to be all set when Davis was recalled and Arnold voted in as governor. Seems Repubs are just good at stiring up trouble, not at actual governing.
The Dem legislative proposal with fee increases and spending cuts made sense. Sounds like Arnold is the typical cutting off the nose to spite the face kink of guy.

  32. peanutbutter says:

It’s no longer a joke, we *did* vote in the Terminator for the Governor. I feel like I should apologize to every resident California for voting for Arnold, although technically I voted against the recall but then for Arnold if the recall passed anyway.

    Gah.

I have a backload of emoties to upload, sorry guys

  33. gnome de plume says:

I keep wondering how first lady Maria Shriver reconciles Arnold’s political behavior with her heritage.

You are going to have to organize the toy box somehow. Any more emoties and we won’t be able to find the ones we’re looking for! I am already having trouble and I have a photographic memory.

  35. Pellora2 says:

    Here’s this for Sharonlee!
    too big. :brb:

  36. Pellora2 says:

Try this again. Hopefully with better sizes of the pics.

    html-mode1

This one is good size. :brb:

  37. Pellora2 says:

    just too big.

  38. sharonlee says:

I see the picture but don’t understand the steps. Have I mentioned that I am technically challenged?

  39. peanutbutter says:

    @ gnome de plume:
That’s actually why I’ve held off…any suggestions for organizing would be welcomed… I’ve considered expansion boxes, grouping like mindeed ones, etc.

  40. peanutbutter says:

Pellora, just make it a link instead of an img… I did shrink it down and was gonna shrink it more, but then you erased it…

  41. peanutbutter says:

To see pellora’s image, look at this link….

  42. Pellora2 says:

    okay. smaller is better.

    Hi PB.

    ooohhhh! more ‘moties? :yay:

of course, I’ve been so :workinghard: :juggling: :computerincontrol: :geek: :cursorpoke: that I haven’t been pilfering… I remember some the other day (or sometime…. ugh) but would have to go hunt. I’m hoping that I will have time over the weekend. Work has been very stressful, and for the first time in a really really long time, I made a mistake that I could not fix easily, and there were  of frustration. But I’m :) today. Thankfully.

I hope all y’all Bumz have been good while I’ve been :workinghard: which I need to get to today too. Though I now have to run to a friend’s house to unplug her automatic sprinkler timer because she forgot and is going to see her Significant Other in Marin all weekend. Lucky Her! Lucky Him!
So, work will wait a bit. But I need to get invoices in the mail, so work won’t wait that long!

  43. Pellora2 says:

Sharonlee – send me an e-mail to pellora at earthlink dot com and I will send you the actual photos back to you (they will be the ones that Betsy sent to me). You can print them out after you open the links in the e-mail. Then you can use them when you go backstage to post. Of course, if you screw up your back stage pass, like I did, PB and Betsy will rename you and pick some clever password so you can have a back stage pass  hence, pellora “2″

I think alpha list by the names you’ve given the emoties would work… for the ones with “name” buttons. But I’m sure that would take time to do. As to the “picture” buttons of the emoties, for me, I’ve learned the order now finally… if you add any, just add them at the end. Don’t be messing with the order! :nyah:

Did I say Hi PB! Hi Gnome! Hi Sharonlee! Hi Betsy! Hi :thegang:

  45. Pellora2 says:

PB – I don’t know where Betsy is. If this post’s comments get too long, I have a Captain EO post back stage that is ready to go. I know there might and probably is MJ fatigue going on, but this is a neat “movie” he did for Disneyland parks. It would work if you need it.

    Ok. See me later.

  46. Texas Betsy says:

i am back. saving MJ for evening. i’ll look for news or politics for now.

  47. Texas Betsy says:
