Beach House on the Road: Iran Protests
Posted by Texas Betsy in Current Events, Liveblogging, Politics, Relaxed PoliticsWangdangdoodle and I are planning to get to the Texas capitol building about an hour before this protest rally officially begins at 5:30 Beach House (central) Time. I’m bringing the laptop (of course!) but no clear sense of whether I’ll be able access wireless. So, for now, plan on following my twitter page for updates. You do not need your own twitter account to follow mine — just refresh every five minutes or so as you would with a post here, and leave any comments you have on here.
Also, I plan to call in to the H.O.R.N. with a live report as time allows, but will give you a few minutes’ notice both here and on my twitter page so you can tune in at home. (This is a web-only radio network and requires internet access and speakers, but no actual radio waves.) If the rally is too loud, I’ll call in after the rally.
More on the rally:

In light of the tragic and blatantly fraudulent presidential election in Iran, a group of both Iranian and non-Iranian students and concerned citizens of Austin and San Antonio are coming together to hold a demonstration and march at the Texas Capitol on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 5:30pm in solidarity with the people of Iran and to show our disappointment with and disapproval of the election results.
There has been an outpouring of protest over the past two days from the Islamic Republic of Iran and from Iranians and other outraged citizens around the world over the June 12th presidential election in Iran which may not have been fair and truly democratic. The Iranian government is using brutal tactics to crack down on protesters, shutting down their means of communicating with each other, and arresting leaders of the opposition. The universities have been closed down, party leaders have been detained or are under house arrest. Cell phones have been cut off and the internet has been slowed down enough so as to become useless. There is fighting in the streets and scenes that are reminiscent of the 1979 revolution. The event is being called the coup d’etat of 22 Khordad (June 12th).
What: Rally and March to protest the Re-Election of President Ahmadinejad and the Iranian government’s crackdown on opposition groups
Where: In front of the Texas Capitol at 11th and Congress
When: 5:30 PM on Wednesday, June 17

Lots of choices in green attire. I have green permanent markers and fabric pens. Shall I decorate my hat in some way?
Looking forward to the rally coverage.
Hope you have good weather for it. We have 89 degrees and 101 heat index this afternoon and the weather people have just put out a tornado watch.
Extra cost in health care: Just got a call reminding me of my appointment tomorrow. What does it cost to have a person dedicated to call all patients with reminders?
Hiya Bumz! I’m home! Got a new brace that just holds my thumb in place. I get to move my wrist and the first thumb joint. And then do exercises outside of the brace. Doc says he couldn’t ask for better looking X-rays.
My car thermometer said it was 100 the whole time I was in Austin, so I don’t think WDD and TB will find it much cooler than that at the rally. Hopefully they can stay in the shade – there are lots of big oak and pecan trees on the capitol grounds.
Glad of the progress on the thumb front.
Must make you feel free.
I am off to my shop. Need to check on one of my plants that is being sold – I need to spiffy it up for its new home. Then I will come back to prepare for tonight’s lawn watering. We are now in Stage II restrictions, which only allow lawn sprinkling once a week. Tonight is our night. Hand watering you can do pretty much at anytime, but the poor lawn grass has to suffer.
I am in Doodle’s truck. We are on our way. First tweet is up!
What are you tagging your tweets with?
Don’t have a tag. Just texbetsy.
Doodle walking with the protesters. 1 of the organizers was on air on head on for 15-20 minutes.
Home from the rally. Going to shower and then post the pix from the rally.
Home from the rally. It was hotter than the hammered down hinges of Hell. We had close to 300 people and lots of folks honking as they drove by.
I did not know it in advance, but we got to march down Congress Avenue to Sisth Street and back. Someone had a roll of green crepe paper streamer and it started at the front of the march and as people joined, it was passed backwards untill the whole thing was unwound. One long green ribbon that linked all of us together. We were escorted by motocycle police along the route and a cruiser at the back. The march was a block and a half long and one lane of traffic wide.
There was live music and some good poetry. Speakers, too. And chanting, of course.
I hope Betsy posts the pictures soon, I’m beat by the heat!
come on upstairs!
